This past holiday season I was looking to buy my mom a new baking mat for her to use to roll out cookie dough when making her fabulous homemade sugar cookies. She had previously been using a mat she bought 15 plus years ago, and it was withered and falling apart.
I searched high and low online but all I could find were the same standard baking mats. Many of them had different size circles in the middle for pizza and pie crusts, but to my surprise none of them had cute images or any fun sayings on them. And to be honest, I didn’t want to just give my mom a basic baking mat for Christmas; I wanted to give her something that reflected her love of baking!
When I mentioned this to my dad, how I was struggling to find a baking mat that was even a little bit fun or clever, he gave me his usual response of “What if you just make your own? And then you could sell them to others who may be looking for the same thing.” To which I gave him my usual response of “Yeah, maybe”.
I had never been someone looking to start my own business. I’m a recent college graduate with a degree in psychology with the hope of some day being able to help others in a meaningful way.
Knowing this and not wanting to give up too easily, the following day my dad made the suggestion that I could donate a portion of any money I made selling these baking mats to various charities that offered help, and hope, to those facing adversity in their life. My dad pointed out that if I could get others to purchase these baking mats, I might be able to help a lot more people and impact more lives with my donations to charities than I could individually.
After a couple days of brainstorming I decided that this could be a really good idea!
I have always thought of hope as being a special thing; partly because my middle name is Hope, so I’ve literally been carrying hope around with me since I was born. I read a quote a while back that’s stuck with me. It reads, “Hope is the only thing stronger than fear” (Suzanne Collins). Something that is so true and so universal. With hope you can do anything.
With that in mind, LetHopeGrow.org was created! With every sale made Let Hope Grow is donating 100% of the profit to various charities and organizations with the similar goal of providing hope to those in need. I strongly believe in the philosophy of doing what we can with what we have to help others.
