Ryan’s Story

My name is Ryan Pogemiller. My first conversation with ALS began in 2015, when I found out that my father had been diagnosed with the disease. Later, in 2016, he passed away due to the disease. At the age of 15, I realized the mortality of life and the need to find a cure for the disease that took my father.

Since then, I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital (2024-2025) as a biorepository technician in ALS clinical research, helping facilitate the proper handling and transfer of biological samples. During 2025, I returned to school to earn my Master of Science in Bioethics from Harvard Medical School.

Now, I live in Sweden and conduct research with the Center of Research Ethics and Bioethics at Uppsala University. This research will examine access to ALS medication by conducting a normative analysis of comparative healthcare systems through mixed ethical, bioethical, philosophical, and legal perspectives.
