ALS Equipment Support in Manassas, Virginia: Restoring Dignity and Freedom for Ed Belair
Edward Belair spent decades working hard, and when he finally retired, he was ready to enjoy the next chapter. He looked forward to long walks, working in the garden, fixing things around the house, and getting back out on the water to fish. But shortly after his retirement in 2022, Ed began noticing strange changes. What began as breathlessness while fishing soon progressed into muscle weakness and difficulty walking even short distances. In April of that year, he was diagnosed with ALS.
The symptoms worsened quickly. What used to be peaceful outings with his dog became short, exhausting trips. He relied on a transport chair for mobility, which was uncomfortable and limiting. The loss of independence weighed heavily on him. His world, once filled with nature and movement, began to shrink.
Ed’s wife, Dana, reached out to Let Hope Grow through the website. She wasn’t just asking for a piece of equipment. She was asking for hope, a chance to give her husband back a small piece of freedom. We responded by personally delivering a power wheelchair and a threshold ramp to their home in Manassas, Virginia. It was a simple act, but it meant everything.
The chair gives Ed the ability to move around his home and yard with comfort. The ramp ensures he can exit safely. These tools can’t undo the diagnosis, but they can give him back autonomy, access to the outdoors, and a sense of self.
ALS is more than a medical condition. It affects families, routines, and daily joys. At Let Hope Grow, we’re committed to showing up in real ways, with support that makes a tangible difference.
Ed’s story is one of love, loss, and resilience. It’s a reminder of why we do this work and who we’re doing it for.
