ALS Travel Support in Elgin: How One Seat Cushion Helped Shadene Keep Exploring
Shadene Butchart was diagnosed with ALS in November 2017. Since then, life has changed in more ways than most people can imagine. But one thing has stayed the same: her love for travel and her determination to get out into the world, wheelchair and all.
After eight years of navigating the physical, emotional, and financial toll of ALS, Shadene still holds tightly to the joy of experiencing new places. But like so many others living with this disease, even small comforts can make a big difference. A good seat cushion isn’t just about comfort. It’s about endurance. It’s about possibility. It’s about quality of life.
When her husband Doug reached out to Let Hope Grow, he was hoping for something simple, a cushion that could help Shadene stay comfortable in her wheelchair while she continued to live life on her own terms. Thanks to donors like you, we were able to provide a Roho seat cushion that supports her safely and comfortably.
It may seem like a small gesture, but for Shadene, it made all the difference. The photos say it best, smiling near the Capitol, soaking in the sun, surrounded by flowers and freedom.

This is what showing up for the ALS community looks like.
